What is Behcet's Disease? How is Behçet's Disease Treated?
It is a non-infectious inflammatory rheumatism disease that progresses with wounds in the mouth and genital area, skin, eye, joint, vessel and nerve involvement. It is a disease involving the immune system that can affect every part of the body. It causes repeated inflammation in the joints, eyes, heart and brain vessels. The first symptom is white, pitted, painful ulcers called oral aphthae in the mouth at least 3-4 times a year. Genital ulceration is seen in 70-80% of patients. Genital ulcers are painful and usually heal to leave a white mark. Behçet's disease is a multisystemic disease in which all organs in the body can be affected, including aphthae in the mouth, genital ulcers, eye involvement (may go up to blindness), neurologic involvement, vascular involvement, gastrointestinal (gastrointestinal) involvement.
The type of treatment varies according to the organ where the symptoms are seen. Since it is a disease that takes a long time to treat, regular blood tests and eye examinations are performed to investigate the causes of the disease and guide the treatment. For mouth and genital ulcers, skin and joint findings, colchicine, steroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and some topical ointments can be used. In more serious cases, treatments such as cyclophosphamide, azathioprine, cyclosporine, anti-TNF drugs, and high-dose steroids may be preferred.
